After spending hundreds of words detailing the problems with the Young Trustee process, The Chronic’s independent editorial board would like to spell out exactly how Duke Student Government Special Secretary Alice Changer can legitimize the Young Trustee selection process. Our proposal is the simple addition of three amendments:
1. All members of the Nominating Committee must be members of The Chronic’s independent editorial board.
2. All applicants for the Young Trustee position must be members of The Chronic’s independent editorial board.
3. The Young Trustee must be the chair of The Chronic’s independent editorial board.
The selection mechanism we have devised is free from bias, ipso facto, because we devised it. Our amendments must be adopted swiftly so that we may increase transparency, heighten student interest and create a fairer process. The plan Changer submitted last Wednesday is not reform in the truest sense of the word. But with the right amendments—specifically, the three aforementioned ones—it’s not too late to make it work.
